I’ve been helping Robert Nix spread the word about the upcoming Russell High Class of 1957 Rally scheduled for June 3rd. I tried to call William Smarr twice and his wife answered the phone both times. Her name is Sang. She is from Korea and although she has been in the US for many years her English is sometimes difficult to understand. The only words that I could understand were, “William is gone.” So I sent him a short letter about the reunion that included my telephone number and email address. Yesterday, I received an email reply from his next door neighbor that William died on October 25, 2005. I’ve since talked to his neighbor, Brenda Lunsford, and his brother, Gene. Gene graduated from Russell in 1959 and lives in Chamblee. I talked to William and Sang prior to our last two reunions. In 1997 he lived near Killeen, Texas and in 2002 he lived near Shreveport, LA. He spent 30 years in the Army and then worked for the Army in a civil service position. He and Sang were married many years and have a daughter who lives just a few houses from their house.
